REPUBLIC SERVICES AND UPS JOIN GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY CAUSE AS NEWEST MEMBERS OF TOGETHER FOR SAFER ROADS

FEBRUARY 22, 2016

Together for Safer Roads (TSR), a coalition of global private sector companies working together to improve road safety, welcomes two new members – Republic Services and UPS. They join 11 other member companies working collaboratively to help reduce road injuries and deaths by 50 percent by the year 2020 – a goal set by the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety

Based in Phoenix, Republic Services is a recycling and non-hazardous solid waste services company that employs 31,000 people and operates a fleet of 15,000 vehicles in the United States. Road safety and the safety of its drivers is the company’s top priority, and has led to the creation of some of the most robust employee training programs and safety protocols in the country.

“We’re excited to join TSR and contribute our expertise to advance road safety by working collaboratively with other private sector companies, as well as the public sector and academia,” said Jim Olson, Republic Services’ vice president of safety and environmental compliance. “Our expertise, alongside the other diverse members of TSR, can help communities create a sustainable impact in road safety by contributing our knowledge in driver training, truck technology and safety systems.”

Similarly, UPS, the world’s largest package delivery company and a provider of supply chain management solutions, operates an extensive global network and has a long history of creating programs that promote road safety. Programs include its Integrad® driver training, a 46-hour course with a focus on safety and compliance, and its “Circle of Honor” program, which highlights more than 8,000 of the company’s drivers who have driven 25 years or more without an accident.

“The safety of our employees and the communities we serve is of the utmost importance to us, as we operate in 220 countries and territories with a fleet of 120,000 vehicles on the street every day,” said Bob Gerlach, UPS’ director of global health and safety. “We invest more than 3.8 million hours a year to safety training for our employees. Joining TSR provides us the opportunity to collaborate to help reduce the 25 to 33 percent of global crashes that are work-related.”

Formally launched in 2014, TSR engages road users, governments, policymakers and other stakeholders to identify and address top road safety issues. TSR members bring their knowledge and expertise to advance the private sector’s role in safer companies and their fleets, cross-sector collaborations, and data-based solutions.

“UPS and Republic Services have vast expertise and knowledge in the world of road safety, and we are thrilled that such well-respected and widely recognized companies are willing to share their expertise and resources to achieve our shared goal: a world where roads are safer for all people,” said Scott Ratzan, governing board member of TSR and vice president of global corporate affairs of AB InBev. “Both of these companies bring their own unique perspectives to work alongside our current members and we look forward to working together to make roads safer.”
