Vision Zero Fleet Safety Forum

Please join us for NYC DCAS and TSR’s Vision Zero Fleet Safety Forum, focusing on the power of public-private partnerships for safer roads.

NYC DCAS そして より安全な道路のために共に are partnering to offer a day bringing together leading stakeholders from public and private fleets, government officials, innovative safety technology companies, policy experts and road safety advocates for keynote speeches, panel discussions, and breakout sessions.

The event is free and includes breakfast and a networking lunch. Reservations are required for attendees.

Forum Program

Exhibit Hall and Registration
8am-9am

Join us before the event to explore the exhibit hall, where representatives from leading safety companies and organizations will be present including VisionTrack, Magtec, Sturdy, Geotab, Hang Up and Drive, industry representatives from Quebec and others. In addition, attendees will be able to visit the mobile New York State DMV unit to take REAL ID photos or conduct license renewals. 

Light breakfast, coffee, and tea will be served.

Welcoming Remarks
9am – 9:30am

To launch the annual forum, we will have introductory remarks in the main auditorium from, New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) Commissioner Dawn Pinnock, Together for Safer Roads Executive Director Peter Goldwasser, and New York State DMV Commissioner, Mark J. F. Schroeder.

Update on NYC?s Safe Fleet Transition and Special Announcements
9:30am to 9:50am

Keith Kerman, DCAS Deputy Commissioner and NYC Chief Fleet Officer, will give an update on the city?s efforts to improve safety in the largest municipal fleet in the country.

Keynote Speaker and Presentation of Global Vision Zero Leadership Award
9:50am to 10:15am

We are honored to have Natalie Draisin, Director of the North American Office & UN Representative for FIA Foundation join us as our first keynote speaker of this year?s forum. Natalie leads the Foundation?s global efforts to advance evidence-based solutions that improve public health through safe, sustainable mobility.

A Vision for Tomorrow
10:15am-11am

During this panel, we will hear from vehicle manufacturers, technology providers, large trucking fleets, health professionals, and advocates to discuss topics such as London?s Direct Vision Scheme, advances and obstacles to domestic truck redesign, and how technology can play a critical role in addressing vehicle safety. We will also look at the early results of American blind-zone reduction pilot programs and how we are building the Truck of the Future here in New York. Moderated by Dr. Alex Epstein, Safety and Sustainability Senior Engineer, US DOT Volpe Center.

Fireside Chat Roundtable: ?The past, present, and future of safe and sustainable for hire vehicle fleets?
11:15am to 11:45am 

This fireside chat will bring together the longest serving Commissioner at the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, Matthew Daus, currently partner and chair of transportation at the law-firm Windels, Marx, Lane, & Mittendorf LLP and President of the International Association of Transportation Regulators and the current NYC TLC Commissioner and 2022 Regulator of the Year award winner David Do. They will discuss how TLC has revolutionized the for-hire vehicle fleet in NYC to focus on road safety, driver training, and furthering a living wage for the industry. As part of their discussion, they will also address how electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles will play a role in these fleets locally, nationally and globally.

?Braking? the Culture of Speed Panel
11:45am-12:30pm

This panel will bring together federal leaders, road safety organizations, victim advocates and fleet operators to discuss how we can lower speeds through a variety of interventions, including education, driver training, and innovative technology like intelligent speed assistance. Importantly, we will also explore the social and cultural aspects of speed, discussing how as a society we can best understand and confront what is often an overwhelming glamorizing of speed.

Featured Speaker: Estrella Merlos (12:30pm-12:50pm)

Joining us as a featured speaker at this year?s forum is Estrella Merlos, who serves as Global Head, Road Safety and Associate Head, CIFAL Global Network, at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in Geneva. She is responsible for overseeing UNITAR?s Network of 21 training centers (CIFAL Global Network) located across the globe, as well as UNITAR?s Human Mobility Project and the Road Safety Global Training Initiative.

Afternoon Workshops 1:45pm-3pm
OPTION 1: The Power of Procurement

This workshop will take a deep dive into the world of procurement and will specifically look at how we might best revise and update procurement policies and procedures so that direct vision trucks can be more easily identified, approved and ultimately purchased. Workshop discussion will include best practices from TSR?s new Direct Vision Adoption Guide, a practical tool to help operators transform their fleets for safety

OPTION 2: Storytelling for Change

Hearing from leading communication, education and social responsibility experts, we will learn about the art of storytelling and discuss how to best leverage stories to drive change and create safer policies and outcomes. The workshop will feature thoughtful presentations from experts ? both public and private ?  who will share their insights, their own personal stories and lessons learned. The session is interactive, and you will have the opportunity to ask your own storytelling questions and begin to build your own road safety story.

OPTION 3: Rightsize, Then Electrify

This workshop will focus on rightsizing fleets and the safety, environmental and community engagement aspects of doing so. The conversation will be led by a leading expert in the field ? Director of Seattle?s Department of Transportation Greg Spotts, and will include specific examples and best practices so that participants can leave with a better understanding of how they can analyze the ?right size? of their own fleet.

Closing Remarks

Joining us to close this year?s forum is Sam Stephens, Executive Director of the AB InBev Foundation (ABIF). Sam will be discussing global trends in road safety and offer his perspective and insights on successful public-private partnerships.
