Road Safety Coalition Celebrated with Closing Bell at Nasdaq
August 6, 2018
Washington, D.C. ? Today the Together for Safer Roads (TSR) coalition celebrated its collaboration to make the world?s roads safer for all people by ringing the NASDAQ Closing Bell. The coalition brings together the private sector?s capacity and technical expertise, partners with the public sector, and expands the resources available to create safer transportation and mobility systems.
Road safety is one of the most critical and urgent social and economic challenges in the world?approximately 1.25 million people die on the world?s roads every year. What?s also alarming is the number of fatalities and injuries aren?t decreasing consistently as many countries around the world experience rapid urbanization and motorization. More than ever before, communities need sustainable, innovative, and proven solutions that provide a safe source of prosperity.
?As a leader in the connected car industry, AT&T is fully committed to road safety. From launching our It Can Wait campaign to end texting while driving to our sponsorship of the American Center for Mobility to advance autonomous and safety solutions, we are active across the entire ecosystem,? said Chris Penrose, president of IoT solutions, AT&T. ?It was a natural step for us to join forces with TSR and be a private sector leader to improve road safety by sitting on their Board.?
TSR members? passion to save lives, combined with their commercial expertise and capacity to innovate, provides the fuel for the coalition to:
- Leverage private sector data, technology, and solutions to advance road safety approaches;
- Accelerate the understanding of local road safety root causes and evidence-based interventions that reduce road injuries and fatalities;
- Work across industries and with government, academia, and non-governmental organizations to enhance road safety initiatives with private sector expertise; and
- Build sustainable capabilities and capacity to help foster safer road tech, cities, companies and fleets, and policies.
?Vehicles are a top safety vulnerability when sharing the roads with other types of users,? said Michael Burdiek, president and chief executive officer of CalAmp. ?CalAmp is committed to developing strategic partnerships with forward-thinking companies and working alongside other TSR members and our partners in the public sector to bring machines and people together to communicate seamlessly to save lives.?
TSR includes many of the world?s most purpose-driven companies, including AB InBev, AIG, AT&T, and Republic Services, that are consumer-facing and enterprise-focused. Together, the coalition impacts hundreds of thousands of professional drivers and vehicles, millions of employees, and tens of millions of citizen road users.
?When the private sector invests in road safety, we become devoted partners in the communities where we live and work,? said David Braunstein, president of TSR. ?Whether it?s collaborating with cities to understand root causes and accelerate innovative interventions or benchmarking our own safety operations to be best in class, our programs are part of the measures needed to protect our families, friends and neighbors and to advance economic sustainability.?
