Gulfton’s Journey to Complete Community & Life – TSR at SXSW
(February 3, 2022) – U.S. road traffic deaths surged to 31,720 in 2021 ? one of our nation’s most shameful and addressable statistics. The problem is most severe in poverty-struck communities like Gulfton, a densely populated Houston enclave that is 71% Hispanic and has a large immigrant population. In 2020, as part of Houston mayor Sylvester Turner’s “Complete Communities” program, Together for Safer Roads (TSR), a global NGO dedicated to equity and road safety, collaborated with Connect Communities, Houston PublicWorks, Houston Planning, Anheuser-Busch, AT&T and AIG. The groundbreaking work paired the private and public sector to begin transforming a former Vision Zero pipe dream (no deaths on our roads) into a reality. Its about complete community. It’s about saving lives.
