With An Increasing Number of New Yorkers Killed While Biking in 2019, Together for Safer Roads Convened its Member Businesses, Leaders from City Government and Safety Experts to Develop Pilots to Prevent Collisions Between Large Vehicle Operators and Bike Riders

BROOKLYN, NY ? Nov. 1, 2019 ? Together for Safer Roads (TSR), a coalition of leading private sector companies driven to save lives, today announced a collaboration with the City of New York and TSR members to improve cyclist safety. The partnership kicked off with a workshop, Digitizing Vision Zero, at the NYC Fleet Vision Zero Fleet Safety Forum, in which both parties convened public and private sector leaders in fleet safety management, technology and bicycling to discuss data, analytical and technological solutions to improve cyclist safety in New York City. The workshop produced data- and technology-based concepts that will be developed into pilot projects. The shared goal is simple: reduce conflicts between people riding bikes and large vehicle operators.

Vision Zero is a multi-agency initiative to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on City streets. The pilot projects will be developed by public and private sector partners. Learnings and opportunities to scale will be coordinated under TSR?s Global Leadership Council for Fleet Safety, a program that uses peer-to-peer knowledge-sharing to help smaller fleet operators create safety cultures and reduce risk. Over 16 business and city agencies participated in the bike safety workshop, including Together for Safer Roads’ members Geotab and CalAmp.

Despite the fact that overall traffic fatalities in New York City have reached a record low in 2018, bicyclist deaths this year have already surpassed last year?s total. To-date, 25 people have been killed biking in the city. Almost half of those deaths have involved truck operators. The Digitizing Vision Zero workshop is in support of New York City?s ongoing road safety efforts to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries. The half day workshop consisted of four sessions:

Using Telematics and Bike Trip Data for Cycling Safety
Driver Safety Training and Techniques for Vulnerable Road User Exposure
Marketing and Messaging Vision Zero for and to the Fleet and For-Hire Industries

Thereafter, TSR, the New York City Vision Zero Task Force and the businesses community will develop plans for 3-5 projects that pilot the use of data to reduce bicyclist and fleet operator conflicts, as well as improve driver training and communications processes.
