Together for Safer Roads Partners with Three Global Cities to Address Critical Road Safety Challenges

TSR?s global member companies share expertise with Atlanta, São Paulo, and Shanghai to improve road safety

Washington, D.C. ? Together for Safer Roads (TSR), a coalition of global private sector companies, is partnering with three cities around the world?Atlanta, Ga., USA; São Paulo, Brazil; and Shanghai, China?to identify and address the cities? strategic road safety challenges. Through TSR?s Safer Roads Challenge, member companies are sharing their knowledge, data, technology, and global networks to determine road safety challenges and potential solutions.

?Recognizing that safer roads are a shared responsibility, our Safer Roads Challenge initiative brings the private sector together to work side by side with local governments and stakeholders,? said Carlos Brito, chairman of TSR and chief executive officer of AB InBev. ?We are able to bring the private sector?s innovative spirit, creative thinking, and nimbleness to each challenge to accelerate understanding of the root causes and develop sustainable solutions.?

Local areas apply to the Safer Roads Challenge by identifying a top strategic road safety challenge that they propose to address with TSR support. Winning cities then work with a team of subject matter experts from TSR member companies. At the end of the engagement, the TSR team delivers strategic recommendations that draw upon the technical experience and strategic insight of the TSR team, local leadership, and community members engaged in the project.

“Partnership and collaboration are at the heart of Together for Safer Roads,” said Peter Hancock, vice-chairman of TSR and president and chief executive officer of AIG. “By safely sharing data between the public and private sector, we can demonstrate how learning together is the best route to solving big challenges like road safety.”

TSR?s first three Safer Roads Challenge partners are:

Atlanta, Georgia, USA

As part of the Renew Atlanta infrastructure bond program, TSR is supporting the City of Atlanta to reimagine Atlanta as a safer city. The collaboration is supporting Atlanta?s goal to reduce the number of pedestrian and vehicle crashes along the North Avenue smart corridor. In 2014, the crash rate on North Avenue was more than 200 percent worse than the statewide average for similar corridors. To determine the best solutions to reduce this crash rate, and ultimately save lives, TSR is analyzing hyper-local root causes of collision risk to forecast warning alerts. Analysis is based on curating and aggregating data sources and insights from the City of Atlanta and TSR member companies.

?I am pleased that the City of Atlanta was chosen from among the world?s cities to participate in TSR?s Safer Roads Challenge, an exciting partnership to tap the expertise of the private sector in order to make our roadways safer for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians,? said Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. ?Atlanta?s North Avenue corridor needs study and solutions to reduce wrecks and promote safety. São Paulo, Brazil

Vida d? Prefer?ncia: Movimento Paulista de Segurança no Trânsito, a partnership between the State of São Paulo and the non-governmental organization, Centro de Lideranca Publica, with support from businesses, including TSR members, aims to save 22,000 lives in São Paulo State?reducing the state?s crash fatalities by half by 2020. Just this year, the initiative developed and launched the INFOSIGA SP data system, which unifies government agency data in real time. TSR acts as an advisor to this initiative, providing strategic counsel to the INFOSIGA SP data system and its insights, as well as forthcoming road safety action plans to be implemented.

“Today is an extremely important day. We are here signing another good partnership with TSR and at the same time taking another step in the movement for road safety,? said Governor of São Paulo Geraldo Alckmin. ?In the first term of 2016 from January to June, compared with last year, we had 30 thousand fewer crashes and 233 fewer deaths, which was work done by many people and now will expand with a new partnership with TSR.”

Shanghai, China

Working with the Tongji University Joint International Research Laboratory of Transportation Safety, TSR is supporting the establishment of a collaborative mechanism between government, business, academia, and non-governmental organizations to enhance the safety of Shanghai?s transportation. This collaboration is aligned with Shanghai?s Transportation goal to reduce the road fatality rate from 3.73 to 2.63 fatalities per 100,000 motor vehicles by 2020. TSR is providing its skills and subject matter expertise to support three programs: 1) crash hotspot analysis and improvement; 2) behavior-based commercial driver safety analysis education; and 3) safer users through road safety awareness campaigns.

?The involvement of TSR will enhance the safety culture of Shanghai by establishing safer road segments and training safer vehicle drivers,? said Dr. Xuesong Wang, executive director of Tongji University Joint International Research Laboratory of Transportation Safety. ?In addition, the established collaboration mechanism and education strategy will result in more organized safety evaluation methods from aspects of infrastructure to human behavior.?
