Gulfton’s Journey to Complete Community and Life

Artist rendering of Gulfton in Houston, TX. SXSW 2022 session - Gulfton's Journey to Complete Community and Life

At SXSW in 2022, we were part of a panel discussion called, ?Gulfton?s Journey to Complete Community and Life.? Additional panelists included representatives from the City of Houston, ABinBev, and Connect Community.

Road traffic deaths in the United States surged to 31,720 in 2021 and the problem is most severe in poverty-struck communities like Gulfton, a densely populated Houston enclave that is 71% Hispanic and has a large immigrant population.

In 2020, as part of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner?s ?Complete Communities? program, we collaborated with Connect Communities, Houston Public Works, Houston Planning, Anheuser-Busch, AT&T, and AIG on the Hillcroft Avenue project. Pairing the private and public sectors together, we turned Hillcroft Avenue, once considered one of the most dangerous roads in Houston, into a safer and more equitable road inspiring Vision Zero improvements around the city of Houston and bicycle improvements in adjacent neighborhoods.

We were thrilled to be able to bring together the “Gulfton’s Journey to Complete Community and Life” panel at the SXSW 2022 conference. It allowed us to introduce this project to experts in road safety, Corporate Social Responsibility and more. Selected via SXSW?s PanelPicker®, their user-generated session proposal platform that allows the SXSW community to have a voice in what sessions are programmed at SXSW, our session was very well received.

Billed as an essential destination for global professionals, SXSW features sessions, music, film screenings, exhibitions, professional development, and more proving that the most unexpected discoveries happen when diverse topics and people come together.

And now you too can listen to the session.
